The Register has some very interesting news from Nokia today. It appears that Nokia are finally allowing end users the ability to update their own phones’ software! Gone are the days when you would have to drive miles to find your local Nokia Service Centre willing to perform the update for you.

Always one to play with the ‘latest and greatest’, i took the plunge and updated my Nokia 6681’s software. The process is actually quite risky as if your computer crashes, any sort of power-cut occurs, or even if your phone just crashes you will have a rather expensive brick on your hands. At the very least you’d need to take it to a level 3 service centre to get it re-flashed from dead. After downloading the software from Nokia’s website I took the plunge and upgraded my software. I had already backed up my phone’s configuration using Nokia’s in-built ‘backup and restore’ utility. Five minutes later and my phone was successfully updated with the latest firmware:

v6.09.00 : 27-02-06.
I can't actually find anywhere on google that details the changes, so if anyone knows where I could find this list i'd appreciate it.  I am pretty relieved it all worked as well -- nice one, Nokia!

Horaayy..there are 2 comment(s) for me so far ;)

Hi Chris,

I’m afraid hat I haven’t good news, as you may already know its hard to find change log for 6681, actually its almost mission impossible, however all vailable change logs as well as actual firmware version for Symbian phones you can find at below link:

Hope that helps,

Cheers,
Teo

Hi Teo,

Many thanks for that URL. I’ll take a look right away.. :-) The bluetooth stacks appears slightly more reliable in this firmware, tom tom has less problems connecting than it used to!

All the best,
Chris
